  1. Avon is the Celtic name for river. There are
  2. several rivers of this name in England and
  3. Scotland. The principle three being the
  4. Warwick Avon which joins the Severn at
  5. Tewkesbury and is almost 150km long. The
  6. Bristol Avon which, after rising in the
  7. Cotswolds, enters the Bristol channel at
  8. Avonmouth and is almost 120km long. The
  9. Wiltshire Avon, which rises in Malborough
  10. Downs and after around 105km enters the
  11. English Channel at Christchurch.

  13. Avon was a county of South West England, and
  14. was formed in 1974 from the city and county
  15. of Bristol and parts of North East Somerset
  16. and South West Gloucestershire.
